Construction in Alghero

The country homes

The walls are built from stone and clay, and then covered with mortar. The roof may be either a single sloping, or more often a two-sided sloping roof. The roof structure is made of beams and rafters.

The tiles are half moon shaped, the most common type in Sardinia and often referred to as the “teula sarda” or Sardinian tile. Where the farmhouse is made up of two adjoining rooms, the diving wall is often reduced to a mere archway (diaphragm) which serves as a central support to the roofing structure.
The palace

These buildings with two or three stories have usually been reformed. They line the pathways of the historic countryside. They originally formed part of large properties dedicated to vineyards or olive groves, along with other spaces and buildings. The main building was rectangular, with a two-sided sloped roof. One of the longer wings of the house would border on to the pathway and there was no clear entrance. A gateway led into a courtyard where the visitor was faced with the doors to the storerooms and the house. Stairs, usually on the inside would lead up to the higher floors. Next to the main building, there were more constructions that are rustic, a chapel, and the garden. Fruit trees were cultivated in the garden, which was enclosed with high walls, there were pathways, fortifications, a well, and a water trough. The “palace” was often decorated with galleries to contemplate the view thus imitating the villas on the continent.

Houses in the Orchards, Vineyards, and Olive Groves

This is not so much by how they were built, since they were used mainly for refuge and to store tools but by, a complex series of walls of installation used to retrieve water from the well for watering the land; as well as all the other equipment that completed the orchard making it functional for specialised agriculture. Next to the house was a drinking trough for the animals.
